Man's masterpiece proposal in front of the Northern Lights

But one Australian man has set the bar pretty high after he proposed to his girlfriend under the incredible display of the Northern Lights.

Though it wasn’t his first attempt at a proposal – with the first go seeing him accidentally throwing away the ring, the second was nothing short of a masterpiece.
34-year-old landscape photographer Dale Sharp popped the question five years after he first decided his now-fiance and fellow photographer Karlie Russell, 29, was the one while the pair were standing together in front of the Aurora Borealis.
When he first attempted to pop the question during a trip to Iceland last year, he managed to lose the ring. He’d hidden it inside a bottle of hand cream and packed it away in their luggage, but when Karlie found that the luggage was actually overweight, she binned the hand cream, and unknowingly said goodbye to the $4,000 ring hidden inside.
Dale’s heart sank when he realised the ring was lost while desperately trying to find it – but it turns out it may have been a blessing, as his next attempt at proposing was surely one to remember.
Not letting the first proposal fail spoil his plans of romance, and over the next two years Dale worked hard to save up money for a new ring as the couple planned a two-month work trip through Iceland, Norway and Finland.
He had originally planned to pop the question seven years to the day they had first began to date, but while experiencing the Northern Lights together, he thought it was too beauitful an opportunity to miss.

‘It was the most amazing display of colour in the Aurora that we’ve ever seen,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.
‘I wanted to take full opportunity and make it happen at its absolute best. The moment was right, it felt good, so why not.’
While beneath the Northern Lights, Dale asked Karlie to take a selfie with him. Though Karlie was confused as to why Dale wanted a selfie as opposed to a photo of the gorgeous skies, she happily smiled for the camera.
Dale set up a head torch behind the couple to light them up against the lights while putting the camera on timer, and waited for the Aurora to glow. As it did so, he got down on one knee and asked Karlie to marry him.
Of course, she said a resounding ‘yes’.

Dale, who had visited the lights 30 times with Karlie beforehand, said that his Northern Lights proposal was inspired by him wanting to do ‘something different from everybody else’.
He said: ‘We both love chasing the Northern Lights and photographing them together. So it seemed pretty fitting.
