James Cameron: Avatar 2 release date has been delayed
The second film in the Avatar franchise was scheduled to hit cinemas over the Christmas period in 2018.
But Cameron told The Toronto Star the movie would have to be pushed back because they’re filming more than one sequel at once.
He said: ‘Well, 2018 is not happening. We haven’t announced a firm release date.’
‘What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases,’ he added.
‘So, we’re not making Avatar 2—we’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking. It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam.’ .
The 62-year-old had some pretty decent excuses why there would be a delay though, adding: ‘It took us four-and-a-half years to make one movie and now we’re making four.’
‘We’re full tilt boogie right now. This is my day job and pretty soon we’ll be 24-7. We’re pretty well designed on all our creatures and sets.’
Avatar 3 was set for release in 2020, followed by Avatar in 2022 and Avatar 5 in 2023.
With the second movie now delayed, it looks like fans will have to wait a little longer for the rest of the franchise films.
But Cameron said it would be worth the wait: ‘It’s pretty exciting stuff. I wish I could share with the world. But we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we’re going to draw that curtain when the time is right.’
Fans could get more Avatar goodness if they visit Florida where a new themed Disney World park opens later this year.
Cameron has already been to visit Pandora and gave a behind the scenes look at just some of the exciting things fans can expect to see.
