First footage of new Sonic Forces game leaks

Getting excited about a new Sonic The Hedgehog game has the most consistent track record of disappointment in the entire games industry.
First footage of new Sonic Forces game leaks

But the one recent game that looked likely to break the infamous Sonic cycle was Sonic Mania – because it’s a retro 2D game made by fans, not a cartoon tie-in by the cheapest developer Sega could find.
So
It still looks extremely promising, but the bad news it’s been delayed from spring to summer. To compensate Sega has released the video below of Flying Battery Zone, which looks great.
This all happened at a panel at the SXSW film and media festival, where the previously mysterious Project Sonic 2017 was revealed for the first time. It was meant to be kept a secret, but as ever footage managed to leak out anyway, and you can get a pretty good look at the game below.
Its real name is Sonic Forces and the plot revolves around Sonic and (hopefully not) his pals trying to fight back in a world in which Dr Robotnik (no, we’re not calling him Eggman) won. The gameplay footage is of an into-the-screen section that looks similar to previous 3D Sonic games like Sonic Heroes.
The word from the panel is that the game with have three styles of gameplay: what you see in the video, a classic 2D approach, and another unknown style (maybe 3D free-roaming?).
There are apparently multiple paths through each level and the Wisps from Sonic Colours are part of the game. Sonic Forces is from the team behind Sonic Generations and Colours, the only two genuinely good Sonic games of the modern era, so hopes are high. (As is confusion as to why they were ever taken off the series in the first place.)
Sega should officially release the footage later today but there doesn’t seem to be any specific release date yet, just later in 2017. The game is planned for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC – as is Sonic Mania.
