What is Ghost in the Shell movie about?
The film is set in the near future, where Major (played by Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind – she’s a human who has been cyber-enhanced after a terrible crash.
She has become a perfect soldier, devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals in the world.
When terrorism becomes so severe that people’s minds can be hacked into and controlled, Major has the unique ability to stop it.
However, as she gets ready to face a new enemy, she discovers that she’s been lied to: her life was stolen, not saved.
Now that she knows the truth, Major will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her, and put a stop to it before it happens to others.
Why aren’t some people happy about the film and what is whitewashing?
Many aren’t pleased that the actress has been given the lead role, and the film has been accused of whitewashing.
As Johansson was chosen over an Asian actress for the role, she has received a backlash from fans, with many saying that Hollywood has a fear of casting non-white actors due to potential profit losses.
It has also been alleged that the filmmakers used CGI and other visual effects to test out altering Johansson’s appearance so her ethnicity would appear Asian.
Those who are into the original animation have said the plot is being Westernised, which they are not happy about, because the original story is uniquely Japanese.
Why is the #IAmMajor hashtag being trolled on Twitter?
Paramount Pictures launched the #IAmMajor hashtag a few weeks ago, in an effort to get the public excited for the imminent release date.
A generator has been created, which allows fans to upload photos and write a sentence so they can create their own ‘I Am Major’ photo.
However, fans have trolled the campaign, using it as a way to call out the film bosses over the casting of Johansson in a Japanese film.
