North Korea has launched a ballistic missile in ‘show of force’ to Donald Trump
The medium, or intermediate, range missile flew for 500km and was designed as a ‘show of force’.
Kim Jong Un’s nation has threatened that they could test a longer-range Intercontinental Ballistic Missile at any time.
It came as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the US President were golfing in the so-called Winter White House of Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
The speed of the test comes at an unprecedented rate for the impoverished nation and is ‘absolutely intolerable’ said Abe.
In typical style Trump said: ‘I just want everybody to understand and fully know that the United States of America stands behind Japan, its great ally, 100 per cent.’
Fired this morning from North Korea’s western region around Banghyon, the South’s joint chiefs of staff said.
The Rodong medium-range class missile reached heights of 550km.
US Strategic Command systems were tracking the missile, Lieutenant Colonel Martin O’Donnell said.
Adding military forces would: ‘Remain vigilant in the face of North Korean provocations and are fully committed to working closely with our Republic of Korea and Japanese allies to maintain security.’
At the press conference after today’s missile launch, Abe said: ‘Trump and I myself completely share the view that we are going to promote further cooperation between the two nations. And also we are going to further reinforce our alliance.’
Kim Jong Un has said that the ‘final stage’ of acquiring a missile that can threaten America is his aim.
On Twitter before taking office, the President taunted: ‘North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S. It won’t happen!’
Trump has previously pledged to be tougher on the North Koreans than previous administrations.
Earlier this month, James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis, warned any attack from the North should expect an ‘effective and overwhelming’ response.
Japan was attacked by Trump during the campaign trail for not helping with the cost of hosting US military in the country.
Mattis, the defence secretary, however told South Korea: ‘Any attack on the United States, or our allies, will be defeated, and any use of nuclear weapons would be met with a response that would be effective and overwhelming.’
While Japan insisted that the missile had not reached their sea border they said they would make a ‘strong protest’ over the launch.
South Korea’s foreign ministry condemned the the North saying: ‘North Korea’s repeated provocations show the Kim Jong-un regime’s nature of irrationality, maniacally obsessed in its nuclear and missile development.’
