A12 road remains closed in search for more bodies among wreckage

The driver of the lorry died shortly after the collision in Witham, Essex, on Wednesday evening.

Essex Police said:  ‘As there was extensive damage to the vehicle, work is also being carried out to ensure that there have been no other casualties as a result of the collision.

‘The trailer has been forensically recovered by the multi-agency response team and is being searched to ensure that there are no other fatalities.’

Matters have been further complicated by a large industrial-sized battery which was on the lorry that needed to be ‘made safe’.

Last night one lane of the A12 southbound was reopened following the death of the Witham-based driver who was in his 30s.

Chief Inspector Nick Lee said: ‘This was a serious road traffic collision where a man died.

‘The recovery operation of the lorry is complex due to the nature of the load it is carrying.

‘All the emergency services involved need to be sure the vehicle can be moved safely and ensure there is no risk to the staff involved or other road users.

‘We appreciate this closure will disrupt people’s journeys home from work and we are doing all we can to re-open the road as soon as possible.

‘We appreciate the continued co-operation and understanding of the public.’

Witnesses described their shock when seeing the remains of the crash. Joe McCallum, from Essex, was on the other side of the carriageway after the crash and saw the lorry on fire.

The 28-year-old posted photos on Twitter of the ‘mangled’ scene but was unable to see what the lorry had been carrying or anyone in the driver’s seat.

Other witnesses, like psychology student Chloe Willis, also described the incident.

The 20-year-old said: ‘We had to come to an emergency stop as soon as we saw this lorry turned on its side.

‘A big puff of black smoke covered the sky and all the people in cars started to panic.
