Teenager's prom dress with a stunning Black Lives Matter message
Here name is Milan Morris, 17, she could have gone with the traditional idea of a gown in glitter and pastel tulle.
Instead, she chose to honor some of the unarmed black people shot dead by police, whose deaths sparked the national movement against ‘anti-black racism that permeates our society’.
Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland and Michael Brown are among those pictured on the dress in black and white.
As she said: ‘Yes I’m black. Yes I’m 17. Yes GOD is using me to convey a message that’s bigger than me. #AllLivesMatter #BlackLivesMatter #MoveWithPurpose.’
With her dress, created by designer Terrance Torrance who described it as ‘pretty with a purpose’, was celebrated by most people.
‘Simply stunning and thank you for reminding us all how far we still have to come as a country,’ one poster said, while another called the dress ‘ a work of art’.
Another called it the ‘best prom dress ever’.
However, some took their chance to criticise.
Milan, from Palm Beach in Miami, has now had to face down abuse from racists – just for wearing a dress that meant something to her.
Some people didn’t like the dress itself, while others didn’t like what it stood for.
But judging so far, Milan has got bigger things to worry about.
The high school senior is an ‘all star’ basketball player and will be starting college in Boston College later this year.
