Russia won’t ban Beauty And The Beast but with a 16+ rating

Vyacheslav Telnov, head of the Culture Ministry’s film unit, told KinoPoisk.ru (via Deadline): ‘We will issue the film distribution license without any problems.

‘The minimum age is 16+.’

On Saturday, Russia’s Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky agreed to review the film after a Russian MP reportedly referred to the movie, directed by Bill Condon and starring Emma Watson and Dan Steven, as ‘shameless propaganda of sin’.

Russian law prohibits the spreading of ‘gay propaganda’ among minors, with 2013 laws describing homosexuality as ‘non-traditional sexual relations’.

Mr Medinsky said: ‘As soon as we get a copy of the film with relevant paperwork for distribution, we will consider it according to the law.’

Now he has seen the movie, a remake of the 1991 classic film, the film has been passed for screenings across Russia, although the age rating will mean many young Disney fans will not be able to see the movie, about a young girl who is taken prisoner by a cursed beast in his castle.
