Pharrell Williams Chanel’s first ever male handbag model
Who What Wear Daily reported that the campaign, set to launch April 3rd, will feature Pharrell in a concert hall carrying a crocodile version of the new Gabrielle bag, inspired by virtual reality goggles.
This comes after his AW17 show in Paris where men (including eight-year-old godson, the ever stylish Hudson Kroenig) also carried a version of the Gabrielle bag.
Karl Lagerfeld himself says of the bag, ‘It’s not very feminine in the sense of being chichi.’
Pharrell spoke to WWWD about his excitement when he first received the bag:
‘I was like a nerdy little black kid on a skateboard. So looking at high-end fashion was something that I really didn’t understand in the very beginning. And then I realized, slowly but surely, man, this is amazing. And although there’s mostly the perception that it’s for women, I just started to see, OK, as a man I can wear some of this. So I would wear sunglasses here, or a jacket there.’
In a classic Chanel star-studded lineup, the campaign, launching 3 April, will also feature celebs like Cara Delevingne and Kristen Stewart.
Thanks to stars like Pharrell, Jared Leto, Jayden Smith and Kanye West leading the way, men are starting to embrace the androgynous look more frequently, which is also a reflection of the changing gender attitudes and biases happening right now in our society as a whole.
Hopefully, men walking a mile in the shoes of women (or carrying the handbags in this case), will create a society more empathetic to the demands and needs of the other gender, and vice versa.
Plus, double the wardrobe options, win-win.
