Looking like a rather tired demon is currently a high demand beauty look, thanks to the popularity of the red smokey eye.

You may have seen this one popping up already, the bold look has managed to keep our attention since late last year winning favour with celebs like Lady Gaga and the Hadid sisters.
You may also recognise it as Soko’s signature look.

The grungey-eye was seen on catwalks around the globe for the past month, proving it won’t be dying off anytime soon.
It’s both scary and kind of cool.
But if you’re not the cool cat, Soko or a member of the genetically blessed Hadid clan, how exactly do you rock a red smokey eye without looking like you have some kind of ocular infection?
We asked makeup artist, Caitlin Ginn, for the best way to embrace the trend.

Picking the right shade of red

It all depends on your skin tone, and experimenting will help make sure you choose the shade of red for you.
‘If you have cool undertones then you can wear blue based red’, Caitlin told Metro.co.uk
‘and if you have more warm undertones then go for orange reds. And this applies to picking a red lipstick too!’

Rocking the red for an everyday look

Caitlin says she hasn’t had anyone request the style as it’s not really that convenient for an everyday look.
‘I’d say it’s very high fashion and not something easily wearable.’
‘It would only really work with certain looks. Personally, I wouldn’t buy a red eyeliner to have in my kit, I’d sub in a red lipstick instead.’
Using red lipstick will also allow for a bit more smudge room if you make a mistake, increasing that ‘grungey’ element.

Getting it just right

‘It’s definitely better as a smokey look,’ Caitlin agrees.
‘Edging on the side of a rusty, warm orange-red rather than just a straight true red.’
‘Cara Delevingne did a gorgeous smokey red eye with a nude lip at the premiere of Paper Towns in Australia. She’ll often wear a red/burnt orange eye.’

Caitlin says the one thing we’re all thinking right now,
‘Oh, and if you’re not careful you could look like you got punched in the face!’

If you’re still afraid?

‘Youtuber MannyMUA did a red liner tutorial that is gorgeous!’
