Helicopter fly magically without its blades moving

The video has been baffling viewers who can’t work out how the helicopter is able to operate without its motor.

But things aren’t as they seem.

In fact, the optical illusion is all down to the camera’s shutter speed and frame rate, which distorts the appearance of spinning objects when they synchronise.

The clip shows how the blades appear to shift slightly as the helicopter takes off but not as much as it would need to actually propel the aircraft.

As it begins to fly forward the blades still remain still before the video cuts out.

User Chris Chris, who put the video on YouTube, says it’s all down to a trick of the camera because the ‘camera shutter speed matches helicopter’s rotor.’

As a video by HowStuffWorks explains, shutter speed is the time the camera spends gathering light every time it takes a picture.

So there you have it (it’s actually moving, you just can’t see it!).
