Google Doodle is a reptilian quiz – Komodo dragons

To mark the 37th anniversary of Indonesia’s Komodo National Park, the quiz has been created to recognise the world’s largest living lizard species.

The park was set up in 1980 as a conservation site for the creatures, who have occupied the region for millions of years.

There are around 5,700 giant lizards inhabiting the volcanic islands found in the centre of the Indonesian archipelago – they exist nowhere else in the world so are of huge interest to evolutionary scientists.

The park has expanded to other native wildlife such as the Timoor deer – the main source of food for komodo dragons – and 72 species of birds.

• Komodo dragons can reach up to 10ft (3m) long
• They weigh more than 300lbs (136kg)
• They prey on Timor deer, pigs, smaller dragons and water buffalo
• Komodo saliva contains bacteria that slowly poisons animals who manage to escape their grasp – they have been known to stalk their prey until the poison kills them over a 24-hour period
• Adult Komodo dragons are cannibals – they eat their own species
• 10% of their diet is newly hatched Komodo dragons
