Emma Watson will be very rich after Beauty And The Beast
The British actress was reportedly given an upfront pay cheque of $3 million (£2.4 million) but depending on how well the movie goes over with audiences, sources are suggesting that she could take home up five times that amount.
It’s an impressive amount for Emma, who only banked $60 million combined for all eight Harry Potter movies – and it’s good timing for the Mouse Of House, as the news comes as The Hollywood Reporter claims that the studio now beginning to feel ‘the wrath of some reps, who see the studio’s penny-pinching as on par with Marvel’.
Beauty And The Beast, a remake of the 1991 animation, is currently on track to open in the UK with a three-day haul of £18.4 million, making it the highest grossing three-day opening weekend for a PG movie ever.
On Saturday March 19, the box office of £7.9m was the second highest grossing Saturday ever, only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Rumours during filming of Beauty And The Beast abounded that Dan Stevens, who plays the Beast, was refused a rental car upgrade in order to accommodate his two children; it was also claimed that Disney refused to pay for an upgraded flight for Lily James’ mother during promotion for Cinderella.
What makes it all the more surprising is that the studio is not lost for cash; Maleficent made $759 million worldwide, while Cinderella bought in $544 million and 2016’s The Jungle Book made $967 million.
And that’s not even taking into account it’s subsidiary businesses including LucasFilm Ltd and Marvel Entertainment.
Still, Disney know that they don’t need a star name in order to have a hit; as one source put it: ‘It it’s the right vehicle for the right star, they can be great. But Disney also has the luxury to not have to put a star in there.’
