Toddler unconscious for 40 minutes after contracting dysentery

Charlotte Cullum, 24, was afraid for his life when he became ill with the chronic diarrhoea, nausea, fever and stomach cramps which characterise the disease.

She saw her 16-month-old son James Logan, from Stanford-le-Hope, Essex, have a fit before he lost consciousness and she called 999.

His cousin Ruby, who caught the bug while playing at his house, is still in Basildon Hospital recovering.

‘On Sunday night James went to bed as normal but then he woke up in the middle of the night and was violently sick all over the bed and then the diarrhoea started as well,’ Charlotte told MailOnline.

Describing the moment he had a fit, she said: ‘It was really scary – I saw him lying face down on the floor and making a strange noise as his tongue vibrated in the back of his throat.

‘He was shaking on the floor and his face was floppy so I pulled him up and called 999.’

She said she didn’t know how he picked up the bug, as she is very hygiene conscious, but thinks it could have been in the playground.

An outbreak of bacillary dysentery (also called shigellosis) has been declared in Stoke-on-Trent, where almost 90 people have contracted it.

There have also been unconfirmed reports elsewhere in the UK.
