One dead and dozens injured as train derails in Belgium

One person is dead and several more have been injured after a train has derailed in Belgium.

It’s believed there is one fatality and several casualties after a passenger train derailed outside Leuven station in Belgium.

The train came off the tracks close to Brussels, and a Belgian train official confirmed that several people have been injured.

Frederic Petit of the Infrabel rail service told the VRT network that the accident occurred as the train left the Leuven station at slow speed in the direction of the Belgian capital.

Emergency services were immediately called to the scene.

Dramatic photos of the accident showed one carriage lying on its side.

Train traffic in and out of Leuven, 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Brussels, has been interrupted.
