Antigua should be your next Caribbean holiday destination

Mention you are off to Antigua and you will be met with questions such as ‘where’s that?’ and ‘is that in Spain?’.

Sitting very far away from Spain, just south-east of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea, between Saint Kitts and Guadeloupe, Antigua enjoys an under-the-radar existence.

Or at least it did until its Prime Minister made headlines after inviting Prince Harry to honeymoon with Meghan Markle (should they choose to tie the knot).

Potential royal nuptials aside, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to set the record straight (or at least establish one so people know where it is).

Where to swim (and drink)
It is said that Antigua has 365 beaches — one for each day of the year.

As you’ll have no time to explore each and every beach, we’ve taken the liberty of making you a handy list of some of the best swimming and tanning spots on the island…

Sitting on the south side of the island near Nelson’s Dockyard, you will be kicking yourself if you don’t take a visit to Pigeon Beach.

Boasting a calm and clear ocean, this quiet spot is ideal for those wanting to avoid the cruise ship crowd.

If you get thirsty, walk over to Bumpkins and order a Coconut Crush — you won’t regret it.

Why Antigua should be your next Caribbean holiday destination

If making sandcastles on a white, sandy beach is your sort of thing, look no further than Jolly Beach.

With quite a few hotels nearby, this beach will be busy, so don’t go expecting it to be just you and the sea.

While not quite clear enough for snorkelling, there are plenty of watersports on offer here for the adventurous among you to take part in — but make sure to negotiate your price.

Castaways is the local bar and it’s definitely worth visiting. There’s live music in the evenings for those who have enough remaining energy to dance into the night.

A prime destination for cruise ship and catamaran tours, Turner’s Beach might just be one of the busiest on the island. But never fear; all is not lost.

If you make an effort to avoid the south side of the beach, instead making your way north towards OJ’s and Jacqui O’s (technically Crab Hill Beach, but on the same stretch of sand), you’ll find it is surprisingly quiet.

A short walk along the beach may sound exhausting, but rest assured you will be rewarded with some of the best cocktails on offer as you relax in a canopied bed. Not a bad way to watch the sunset.

A special mention needs to go to Boom at Gunpowder House, in Nelson’s Dockyard.

While it is a bar, it is not on a beach. But what it lacks in sand it makes up for in tasty cocktails and a great pool (just don’t fall in).
