A supermarket is selling wrapped strawberries for £17 individually

All sorted for Valentine’s Day?

If not, why not impress that special someone with one of these individually wrapped strawberries, priced at a mere £17.

Nestled on a bed of synthetic straw and styrofoam, the single fruit is imported ‘fresh by air’ from Japan, and is said to be hand-picked.

You can pick up the ‘Kotoka strawberry gift box’ at a supermarket in Hong Kong. (If HK$168 seems like a good deal, you can probably manage the air fare too).

But if you’re not convinced that one strawberry is worth the equivalent of £17, well, many people agree with you.

City’super, the store selling it, has come under fire for what seems like an extremely extravagant and wasteful product.

The photo has gone viral in China with many saying neither the level of packaging for one fruit, nor the price (potentially the most expensive strawberry in the world) is justifiable.

It’s hard to say exactly how much a single strawberry would cost in the UK, as they are not sold individually.

However, to get a vague idea, the punnet pictured above is from Tesco and costs £2.

With 11 fruits in the pack, each one works out at a little over 18p.

If you were to then sell them individually for £17, that would be a mark-up of 9,344%.
