Ubisoft has announced plans for a new Avatar game

It still seems impossible to believe that James Cameron’s Avatar is the highest-grossing movie in history, and by such a huge margin.

Regardless of what you think of the film’s quality it’s had almost zero cultural impact, as if all the millions who went to see it instantly forgot about it the minute they left the cinema (maybe that’s why they kept going back?).
You’d certainly think a game featuring Halo style hardware and a planet full of Final Fantasy-looking aliens would’ve have had a huge influence on games, but it’s had none at all. Just a single tie-in at the time of the movie’s release, which was also quickly forgotten.
The original game was published by Ubisoft Montreal and had a lot of involvement from Cameron and the movie’s production team. And it seems they at least must’ve been happy with the experience, as now they’re teaming up with Ubisoft again for a new game.
There are no real details as to what the new game is, except that it’ll be made by The Division developer Ubisoft Massive.
That doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be anything like The Division, although Massive were recently caught advertising for someone to handle a live service on a new project – which is presumably Avatar.
The game will use The Division’s Snowdrop engine, so we know it’ll look good, but other than that the video above is just marketing waffle.
Whether it’ll tie in to the new sequel specifically, or be a more general adaptation of the universe is unclear but if it’s an online game, perhaps an MMO, you could well imagine new elements being added as each new sequel comes out and things like the Disney theme park open.
