The Matrix reboot isn’t a reboot insists film’s writer

The X-Men: The Last Stand and The Avengers co-writer was linked this past week to the news that 1999’s cult classic The Matrix was coming back to the big screen with a reboot potentially starring Michael B. Jordan.

Following the news, and the understandable outrage, Penn took to Twitter to ask everyone to calm down a little and ‘stop responding to inaccurate news’.
Because you see, even though Penn ‘can’t comment yet’ he can tell us that ‘the words “reboot” and “remake” were from an article’ and he’s simply trying to expand upon an already-known universe, a la Deadpool and Logan and the X-Men.
Which is the definition of a reboot according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

Still, despite telling us he can’t yet comment on the news that he may be tackling one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever, Penn went on to comment.
‘Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of The Matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories. Look at what people are doing with X-Men universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.’
Say it with us now, Zak… that’s a reboot.
The Matrix, set in a dystopian future in which reality is actually a simulated reality called “the Matrix”, created by machines to subdue the human population, starred Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne, and spawned three sequels.

Keanu recently revealed that he would consider returning to the Matrix universe as Neo – but only if original writers and directors the Wachowski siblings were also involved.
‘They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?’ he told Yahoo Movies.
With Penn now writing, it’s left to be seen if Neo will show his face at any point.
