Spiders having threesomes to avoid being eaten after sex

By having a four-hour long threesome of course… Or at least that’s what male wolf spiders are doing.

Yes, really. And it’s all because they’re scared they’ll become the meal after making love, scientists have revealed.
Before having sex with a female, the male spiders having been seeking out other males to join in – making their chances of becoming dinner a lot lower than if they were to dive in alone.
And luckily for the male spiders, each female wolf spider has two sexual organs, so they can both have sex at the same time.

What is a wolf spider?

Wolf spiders can run at two feet per second – horrifyingly fast for a spider – and have eight huge, horrible eyes.
They get their name because they run after their prey, like wolves, instead of trapping their victims in webs.
Oh, and after sex, the female eats the male.
Wolf spiders can live up to 11 years if given the correct habitat.

Biologist Matthew Persons, a professor of ecology and biology at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, said he decided to look into the behaviour after spotting a spider threesome in his garden.
Proffesor Persons said he caught the third 24-legged lovefest he saw and took it into his home to study it.
He then patiently watched them for a staggering four hours.
Persons added that the seemingly kinky spiders are likely enacting a survival tactic, rather than an animalistic urge for some additional sex.
