Russia gave Power Rangers highest age rating over LGBT character
The film's version of the classic 90’s live action TV series Becky G – or the yellow Power Ranger as you probably know her – questions her sexuality.
In the UK the film has been given a 12A rating but Russian film distributors, WDSSPR, have given it their highest rating.
Weeks after controversy erupted over suggestions that Russia could ban Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty And The Beast over the inclusion of LGBT character LaFou.
Russia change the Power Rangers rating, from 16+ to 18+, is thought to have been brought on by pressure from far-right legislator, Vitaly Milonov. Milonov, who several years ago penned a law ‘against gay propaganda among minors’, went on radio on Thursday to call for the film to be banned.
According to The Hollywood Reporter he said: ‘If fascist ideology is banned in our country, then [movies by] the likes of Dean Israelite should be banned first thing.’ Another legislator, Alexei Zhuravlev, came out to criticise the Culture Ministry for giving the film an exhibition licence.
He said: ‘Some officials [at the Culture Ministry] don’t want to observe laws adopted by the State Duma [lower chamber of Russian Parliament], specifically the law banning gay propaganda among minors.’
