Power Rangers first superhero film to have LGBT character

Early reviews for the reboot of the classic 1990s show have revealed that Trini the Yellow Ranger, played by pop star and actor Becky G, is revealed to be having ‘girlfriend problems’ in one scene.

Describing the moment, director Dean Israelite claimed that it was ‘pivotal’ for the film.
‘For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is’, he told the Hollywood Reporter.
‘She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think that’s what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, “that’s OK”. The movie is saying “That’s OK”, and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.’
The character reveals comes only weeks after it was confirmed that sidekick LeFou in the live-action reimagining of Beauty And The Beast is gay, and despite Russian censors handing the film an adult-only rating as a direct result of the scene, it has done little to dent the film’s success, taking a record breaking £18.4 million in its first weekend of UK release.
