The cold temperatures and shorter days affects egg production, while also leaving chickens feeling a bit rubbish as they can’t handle the cold.
Knitting group is making cosy jumpers for chilly chickens

One knitting group is taking action to help out.
A group of retirees in Boston (where winters are pretty nippy) has been knitting jumpers for local chickens.
Yep. Proper jumpers in chicken size, to help the birds stay cosy and stylish.

Members of the knitting group at Fuller Village were inspired to start their project when they heard about the struggles chickens face around this time of year.

‘I don’t think in my wildest dreams I ever thought anybody made sweaters for chickens,’ Barbara Widmayer, 76, told the Associated Press.
‘There’s so much going on these days that’s kind of contentious in the world. It was actually very calming to me to work on this.’

Local chickens’ egg production has increased significantly since the birds started wearing their snazzy knits, so clearly the project’s doing a lot of good.
Well done to these knitters for using their skills to make something better than a misshapen scarf or a tea cosy. We could all learn from your efforts.
