Black bear falls to death from helicopter during rescue

The animal was being flown to a national park in Prachin Buri, 100 miles east of Bangkok, when the incident happened.

Animal activists were appalled by the death of the Asian black bear, which slipped out of the net it was being transported inside.
Some claim that the tranquillised wild animal woke up mid flight and panicked.
However, a member of the helicopter team denied the claim, stating that the aircraft encountered turbulence which may have caused the fall.
Officials described the accident as ‘unavoidable’.

Thongchai Saengprathum, secretary of the Khao Yai Foundation, demanded that officials in charge of the rescue operation for the Asian black bear face legal action for negligence.

The bear died after it was being airlifted on 11th February – there was no cage for the creature.
The tragic incident killed the bear that had initially been found injured in November, and nursed back to health.
Officials say he was expected to live a long life.
