Beauty And The Beast smashes US box office records
he Disney live-action remake, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, opened worldwide on Friday (March 17) and started breaking box office records almost immediately.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Disney remake took a whopping $63.8 million (or around £67.5 million) at North American cinemas alone on Friday – making it the largest selling PG film of all time after it beat $58 million raised by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in 2009.
And the flick could well become the biggest opening PG movie of all time if it beats Finding Dory’s record of $135 million. With latest projected figures for Beauty & The Beast standing at $170 million plus, it could smash that record pretty soon.
If it meets this huge projected figure, the film could be also join the top ten grossing films from opening weekend of all time, as well as being the biggest March opener if it beats the $166 million debut of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice from last year.
The revamp has also set another record – by being the first Disney film to include a ‘gay moment’.
Director Bill Condon told Attitude Magazine: ‘LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston.
‘He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realising that he has these feelings.
‘And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it.’
Henagar Drive-In said they needed to ‘take a stand’ to show only ‘wholesome movies without worrying about sex, nudity, homosexuality and foul language’.
They added: ‘‘If we can not take our 11-year-old granddaughter and 8-year-old grandson to see a movie we have no business watching it. If I can’t sit through a movie with God or Jesus sitting by me then we have no business showing it.’
