The moon is going to smash into Earth (in about 65 billion years time)
We have bad news and good news: the bad news is that in 65 billion years’ time, the moon is going to plunge downwards and smash into Earth, turning our planet into a sea of lava.
The good news is that by then, we’ll all be history anyway.
In five billion years time, our sun will expand to a hundred times the size it is now, and anything that still lives on the surface of our planet will be blasted into oblivion.
So we probably won’t be worrying too much about the moon, in other words – which will ‘fall inwards’ towards us once Earth’s rotation has slowed to match the moon’s orbital period, said Dr Jason Barnes, a planetary scientist at the University of Idaho.
Dr Barnes said, ‘Eventually, it would get so close that it would spiral inward, dissipating its orbital kinetic energy in a spectacular collision and merger with the Earth.
