Prince’s music to be stream in Spotify ahead of the Grammys

Spotify, the world’s biggest streaming platform, have teamed up with Warner Bros to stream the catalogue, which includes albums Purple Rain, 1999 and Sign O’ The Times and songs Raspberry Berret, When Doves Cry and Let’s Go Crazy amongst many more.

The Swedish streaming service said it had worked directly with Warner Bros., whom Prince had reunited with in 2014 after a turbulent relationship, rather than the singer’s estate.

Music companies representing the rights of the late artist, who died in April 2016, have been working hard to try and get his work on sharing sites ahead of Sunday’s Grammy award show.

Other sites will also have access to Prince’s Warner Bros. catalogue, including Napster, and one as yet unnamed site.

Until now his music has only been available on Jay Z’s streaming service Tidal.

It is not clear how long Prince’s music will be available for as no time limit has been announced.

Fans of the singer have had mixed reactions to the news as before he died, Prince’s approach to streaming and online music distribution was conflicted, having previously allowed his music to be streamed but later retracting it.

The Purple Rain singer, who died at the age of 57 of an accidental fentanyl overdose, fiercely guarded his music copyright.

He famously removed his music from most major streaming services in 2015, but months after his death his estate began making licensing deals to return his music to streaming services, one of the biggest revenue generators in the music industry.

On Thursday the late singers’ estate finalised a deal with Universal, the world’s biggest music label, to release his music recorded after 1995 and music from his much guarded vault, according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Prince was famed for keeping a wealth of recorded material in a safe in the basement of his Paisley Park home in Minneapolis.

Only he knew the safe’s code.
