President’s Day to ‘Not My President’s Day’ by protesters
Originally in honour of George Washington, it’s usually a time to reflect on the greats of yesteryear.
But in 2017, it was recast as ‘Not My President’s Day’ for thousands of Americans who marched in the streets against Donald Trump.
They said they were honouring past presidents by exercising their right to peaceful protest.
At New York’s Central Park, people held signs saying ‘Uphold the Constitution Now’ and ‘Impeach the Liar’.
A rally in Los Angeles also drew thousands, with demonstrators protesting against Trump’s crackdown on immigration and his denial of climate change and environmental issues.
In Chicago, several hundred rallied across the river from the Trump Tower, shouting ‘Hey, hey, ho, ho, Donald Trump has got to go’.
Rebecca Wolfram of Chicago, who is in her 60s, said concerns about climate change and immigrant rights prompted her to start attending rallies.
‘I’m trying to demonstrate as much as possible until I figure out what else to do,’ she said, holding a sign that said ‘Old white ladies are really displeased’.
Hundreds of protesters chanting ‘This is what democracy looks like’ marched through Salt Lake City, Utah.
