Oscar 2017 nominations: Naomie Harris, Dev Patel and La La Land
According to those in the know, aka the bookies taking bets on the favourites, Dev Patel is tipped to win best supporting role for Lion while bets are on Naomie Harris being awarded for her phenomenal performance in Moonlight with a Best Supporting Actress win.
The bookmakers, Coral, have given odds on Naomie Harris winning were 16-1 while Patel had odds of 11-2.
Harris has been nominated for her role as Paula, the mother of Chiron, the central character in Barry Jenkin’s Moonlight.
She was nominated for a Golden Globe for the role but was pipped to the gong by Viola Davies for her role as Rose in the 2016 film about an African-American family in the 1950s.
The awards season so far, and conversations around it, have pitched Moonlight and La La Land against each other as the big contenders for the Oscars.
Damien Chazelle’s Los Angeles based musical, staring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, had success at the Golden Globes coming away with a record breaking seven awards.
But Barry Jenkins’ adaptation of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue leveled the playing field with its Writers Guild Award win for Best Original Screenplay while La La Land came away without any awards.
