Greggs bakery launches first healthy store

I’ve never been into a Greggs, let alone sampled one of their highly acclaimed pastries. Steak Bake? Crantocks Cornish Pasty? You may as well be speaking another language.

Still, that did not stop me from being surprised that the chain has opened a ‘healthy shop’ at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton one of the busiest hospitals in the country.

The store was opened to adhere with local council’s push for healthier takeaway options in the area and NHS targets on healthier hospital foods.

So if you’re looking for a cream bun, you’ll need to try your luck elsewhere or dig to the back.

The layout of the store and food on offer is focused on encouraging people to go for items from Greggs’ balanced selection. This includes options like wraps, soups, salads and yoghurts, all of which contain fewer than 400 calories. While your old favourites like doughnuts and pastys will still be available, they’ll be a bit harder to find and sold singularly.

Redesigning stores to encourage customers to make healthier decisions is becoming increasingly common. Scientists from the Wellcome Trust recently announced they were partnering up with Oxford University academics to redesign our grocery stores to encourage us all to eat less meat and more vegetables.

Roger Whiteside, Greggs chief executive, has said this store is just the first of its kind.

“With ambitions to grow to over 2,000 shops nationwide and ownership of our supply chain, we are in a unique position to have real impact in encouraging people to make healthier-food-on-the-go choices with convenient access at outstanding value.”
