Biggest challenge of any wedding
It’s a hellishly daunting process from the moment a proposal is accepted until the moment you’re being squeezed into the gown on the big day (which, by the way, is the only time you actually stop panicking that you’re not going to fit into your frock because… carbs).
Thanks to TV shows like TLC’s Say Yes To The Dress UK, brides-to-be have an early insight into the whole buying-a-wedding-dress process.
But even if you’ve seen every single episode to date, you probably still won’t be prepared for the task ahead.
So, as we simply feel it’s our duty to fill you in, here are 13 very true realities of wedding dress shopping…
1. Don’t expect to be greeted with free champagne
We’ll start with the harshest reality of them all: it’s not all pop and fizz when you go wedding dress shopping like they paint it in the movies.
Not until you sign on the dotted line and hand over what feels like half of your annual salary, that is. Then the bubbles flow.
2. It’s totally overwhelming
Walking into a wedding store and seeing racks upon racks of different variations of white gowns is enough to make even the most savvy shopper a little bleary-eyed. Where are you meant to begin?!
3. You think you know what will suit you – you don’t
How are you meant to pick out a selection of frocks to take to the changing room when you have literally no idea what kind of wedding dress suits you?
It’s not like you’ve bought loads before. Thank goodness for bridal assistants.
4. The staff will become your BFFs
Within five minutes they’ll know how many bridesmaids you’re having, how your fiancé proposed and how many children you want. They also want you to fall in love with one of their dresses. They’re basically your personal cheerleaders throughout the process.
5. But be warned: you’ve not got all of the time in the world to decide
Most bridal stores offer appointment slots and if you go over your 90 minutes, you’ll know about it.
6. In fact, the whole process takes AGES
Start searching for your frock early as once you’ve found it, you’ll need to order it and then book all of your fittings in. One year is just enough time.
7. Try all you like but your size 14 curves won’t fit into that size 8 dress
And why would you want them to? A smaller dress size means you can’t eat as much at the cake tastings. And where’s the fun in having to cut back on wine in the run up to your wedding?
8. It will cost you more than just the price of the dress
You’ll also owe your families/friends/bridesmaids a few bottles of booze. They’ve just sat through you trying on 33 dresses and they mustered up a reaction for each one.
9. When you know, you really do know
It’s true when they say you just know when you’ve found ‘the one’. That’s when the bickering over which one your mum prefers and which one your mother-in-law prefers stops.
10. Just don’t expect your mum, sister and bridesmaids to cry at ‘the one’
They’ve just watched you try on a zillion wedding dresses. They won’t cry, they’ll rejoice that they don’t have to keep taking photos of veils, buttons and sweetheart necklines.
11. It will help you become ruthless
Budgets go out of the window when it comes to finding your wedding dress. But the good news is it will help you cut corners elsewhere on your big day as you scramble to find the cash for your dress.
Your groom doesn’t really need a new tux, does he?
12. Sense and sensibility come into play
You’ll fret that you’re turning into your mum but your sensible head will come into play: is this dress suitable for a winter wedding? Will I be hot with those sleeves? Is this trail just going to get muddy? Should I buy a bolero with this dress? Will this frock suit my venue? Get ready for it.
13. You will, most definitely, have a moment that’s just like the movies
Because you’re a princess marrying your prince, of course!
If these realities haven’t scared you off ever getting married, why not apply to be on Say Yes To The Dress UK and you could soon find yourself in the show’s Confetti & Lace bridal boutique in Essex.
