Activists hung a massive ‘REFUGEES WELCOME’ banner on the front of the Statue of Liberty
The huge 3ft by 20ft banner was placed across the statue’s observation deck on its pedestal on Liberty Island in New York.
Just over an hour later, park rangers took the sign down.
Although the sign was praised on social media, the National Park Service police announced that it’s strictly prohibited to attach items to the statue, and that they were now hunting for the suspects.
But many who saw it pointed out that the monument, which is a symbol of the US’s acceptance of immigrants, is itself a massive ‘refugees welcome’ sign.
Speaking to NBC 4 New York, people calling themselves ‘the Alt Statue of Liberty’ claimed responsibility for the sign.
