Fire service confirm there have been deaths in Grenfell Tower fire

People who escaped the fire at the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in north Kensington spoke of others trapped and screaming for help, with some holding children from windows and others jumping from upper floors.

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said there had been a ‘number of fatalities’ but could not say how many due to the size and complexity of the building.
She told reporters at the scene: ‘This is an unprecedented incident. In my 29 years of being a firefighter, I have never ever seen anything of this scale.’
Most of the building has been destroyed in the fire (Picture: PA)Pictures from the scene showed flames engulfing the block and a plume of smoke visible across the capital, while others showed residents looking out of windows in the block.
The leader of Kensington and Chelsea Borough Nick Paget-Brown said ‘several hundred’ people would have been in the block when the fire broke out.
Actor and writer Tim Downie, who lives around 600 metres from the scene in Latimer Road, told the Press Association he feared the block could collapse.
He said: ‘It’s horrendous. The whole building is engulfed in flames. It’s gone. It’s just a matter of time before this building collapses.
‘It’s the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen. I just hope they have got everyone out.
‘The first I knew was the noise of sirens, helicopters and shouting. I saw it engulfed in flames.
‘People have been bringing water, clothes, anything they’ve got to help, out to the cordon.
‘I have seen people coming out in their bedclothes – it’s just very distressing.’
Jody Martin said he got to the scene just as the first fire engine was arriving.
He told the BBC: ‘I watched one person falling out, I watched another woman holding her baby out the window… hearing screams, I was yelling everyone to get down and they were saying ‘We can’t leave our apartments, the smoke is too bad on the corridors’.’
Fabio Bebber wrote on Twitter: ‘More screams for help as the fire spreads to another side of the building.
‘We can see how quick the fire spreads via the external panels. It’s unbearable hearing someone screaming for their lives at #grenfelltower.’
George Clarke, who presents the Channel 4 TV show Amazing Spaces, told Radio 5 Live: ‘I was in bed and heard ‘beep, beep, beep’ and thought, ‘I’ll get up and run downstairs as quickly as I could’.
‘I thought it might be a car alarm outside and saw the glow through the windows.
‘I’m getting covered in ash, that’s how bad it is. I’m 100 metres away and I’m absolutely covered in ash.
‘It’s so heartbreaking, I’ve seen someone flashing their torches at the top level and they obviously can’t get out.
‘The guys are doing an incredible job to try and get people out that building, but it’s truly awful.’
Shortly after 6am, London Ambulance Service said 30 people had been taken to five hospitals.
More than 200 firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze which was reported just before 1am on Wednesday.
Firefighters were on the scene within six minutes.
London mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted: ‘Major incident declared at Grenfell Tower in Kensington’ and urged people to follow London Fire Brigade on Twitter.
Former chancellor and now editor of the Evening Standard George Osborne tweeted: ‘Just seen this awful tower block fire near my home in W London. My prayers with those affected & heroes tackling it.’
The cause of the fire was not known at this stage, London Fire Brigade said.
But residents said refurbishment work had recently been carried out with cladding on the outside of the structure and work on the gas supply to the flats.
A residents action group said their warnings about safety had fallen on ‘deaf ears’.
A blog post from the Grenfell Action Group from November 2016 said ‘only a catastrophic event’ would expose the concerns residents had.
The group said there was one entry and exit to Grenfell Tower during improvement works at the block and it had issues with evacuation procedures.
Following the fire, the group posted: ‘All our warnings fell on deaf ears and we predicted that a catastrophe like this was inevitable and just a matter of time.’
Nicky Paramasivan, who was in his seventh floor flat with his partner and child, said the advice issued to residents in the event of a fire was to stay in their flats.
‘If we’d listened to them and stayed in the flat we’d have perished,’ he told the BBC.
He said that after they fled the explosions from the flats included blue flames, suggesting gas.
‘It’s just horrendous. I’m just hoping there’s not too many dead.
‘It went right through. There weren’t no stopping it.’
An acrid column of smoke could be seen rising from the building on Wednesday.
The charred structure still had pockets of flame rising from several storeys as desperate efforts to bring the blaze under control continued.
Schoolboy Omar Kalam, 11, was standing anxiously at the emergency service cordon with father Walid, 44.
‘My brother has friends and they live in there,’ he said. ‘I’m not sure if they are all right yet.’
Parents from nearby Kensington Aldridge Academy, where Omar attends, had been told the school was closed, his father said.
The Metropolitan Police have set up a casualty bureau for anyone concerned about their friends and family on 0800 0961 233.

Nike has made some new boots that only Cristiano Ronaldo can wear

Nike have created the CR7 Mercurial Campeoes to mark what has been a tremendous year for Ronaldo – even by his own very high standards.

Nike has made some new boots that only Cristiano Ronaldo can wear

Over the last 12 months the Portugal star won his first international title by triumphing at Euro 2016 and was part of a Real Madrid side that became the first team to retain the European Cup in the Champions League era. Plus he won La Liga, secured another Ballon d’Or and scored a crazy amount of goals.

The new boots are red with a dash of green, in recognition of the success with Portugal. The rest is all gold because that is the colour of a champion.
Ronaldo will don the blingy special edition footwear at this summer’s Confederations Cup in Russia.

Katy Perry ‘forgives’ Taylor Swift and says that she still ‘loves her’

Is one of the world’s biggest pop battles finally coming to a close?
Katy Perry ‘forgives’ Taylor Swift and says that she still ‘loves her’

During Katy Perry’s promotional Witness World Wide livestream this weekend, the 32-year-old Roar singer admitted that she was totally over the ongoing rivalry, and has now forgiven Taylor after all that’s been said and done.
While speaking with Thrive Global Podcast’s Arianna Huffington the songstress said: ‘I am ready to let it go! I forgive, I forgive, I forgive her and I’m sorry for anything I ever did, and I hope the same from her.’
Perry continued: ‘I think it’s time. There are bigger fish to fry, and there are real problems in the world. You know what I’m saying? And I love her, and I want the best for her. And I think she’s a fantastic songwriter.
‘If we, both her and I, can be representatives of strong women that come together despite their differences, I think the whole world is going to go like, “Yeah, well we can do this.”
‘I don’t know. Like maybe I don’t agree with everything she does and she doesn’t agree with everything I do, but I just really truly want to come together in a place of love and forgiveness and understanding and compassion.’
This comes just days after the Dark Horse singer accused Swift of trying to ‘assassinate’ her character with ‘little girls’ [her fans] claiming that it was ‘messed up.’
She told NME: ‘I did try and reach out to her. I tried to do the right thing, the good thing, and, you know, she shut me down and wrote a song …’
Following this interview, Taylor returned her music back catalogue for streaming, apparently as a way to say thank you to her fans after withdrawing her tracks from sites such as Spotify in 2014.
However this just so happened to be on the same release date as Perry’s new album, Witness.
Katy’s Kats weren’t the only ones to clock this either, as UK singer Lily Allen also piped up on Twitter saying that what Taylor’s decision was ‘mean’.
The pair famously fell out back in 2012, after the Shake It Off singer claimed that Katy had pinched three of her backing dancers from her Red tour.
Since then however, Katy’s opinion on Taylor appears to have softened, so is it officially time to end the Bad Blood?

School children made Teddy bear reaches 100,000ft into space

Roffa reached the stratosphere and travelled 18 miles before the balloon exploded due to altitude pressure.

He was launched by pupils at King’s Rochester Preparatory School field in Boley Hill, Kent, who recorded his journey using a GoPro camera.
Footage shows the curvature of the earth taking in the Thames Estuary, the Isle of Wight and across the English Channel to France.
Roffa was in the air for around four-and-a-half hours and the GoPro stopped recording an hour before he was found in Hadlow, near Tonbridge.

John Jones, head of computing, and Magnus Caithness, head of science, led the project nicknamed Operation Cosmic Dust
Mr Caithness said: ‘We recovered Roffa at around 7pm from Hadlow, but we think he landed at about 6.15pm.
‘A very nice couple were enjoying an evening in their garden when they saw a peculiar object falling from the sky.
‘They noticed where it landed and retrieved it, read the notice on it and called our number.
‘We were just a mile away looking where the last GPS signal had been sent from.’

Pupils, aged eight to 13, have been learning about space as part of the project.
They chose to name the teddy bear Roffa as former pupils call themselves Old Roffensians.

"World’s most powerful console" Xbox One X to be release on November 7

During their E3 press conference, Microsoft opened the show by revealing ‘the world’s most powerful console’ and reeling off all the specifications tucked under the mighty hood.
"World’s most powerful console" Xbox One X to be release on November 7

You ready? There’s six teraflops of computing power and 12GB of GDDR5 RAM. It’ll also deliver native 4K graphics at 60 frames per second.
The machine itself supports 4K UHD Blu-Ray playback, and will also be backwards compatible with all Xbox One games and accessories.
They also announced all Xbox One titles will have improved visuals on the Xbox One X, along with faster load times.
Even if you haven’t invested in a 4KTV, Microsoft also promised titles will see a marked improvement in visuals on 1080p TV’s.
They also boasted it’ll pack the most ‘advanced console processor ever’, with a liquid-cooled vapor chamber commonly used in PC’s.
If, like many, you thought this would result in a brick of a box to eclipse even Microsoft’s standards, turns out they’ve been listening – somehow making the Xbox One X the smallest Xbox in history.
While undoubtedly an impressive piece of kit, there’s still a question of whether the upgrade is worth the inflated price tag – with the 22 announced exclusive titles coming to the ‘Xbox family’ perhaps inadvertently making the cheaper Xbox One models more appealing.
The UK price is also a bit of a sticking point, considering a direct conversion to UK pounds from the US price would land it around £391, significantly lower than £449.99.
Alongside the system, they also announced Forza Motorsport 7 which looks set to showcase what’s capable with the machine’s bag of technical tricks.

Vladimir Putin says he ‘doesn’t care’ who the American president is

Speaking to American TV host Megyn Kelly, the Russian president again denied any state involvement in the presidential election that saw Donald Trump taking top office.
Vladimir Putin says he ‘doesn’t care’ who the American president is

Asked repeatedly about claims the Kremlin interfered in last year’s vote, Putin said flatly that he ‘doesn’t care’ who the US president is, because ‘presidents come and go, and even the political party in power changes – but the main political direction does not change’.
‘That’s why, in the grand scheme of things, we don’t care who the president of the United States is, because we know more or less what is going to happen,’ he said.
Kelly, a former Fox News host known for coming to blows with Trump during the campaign last summer, interviewed Putin for her new show on NBC.
The interview comes after the FBI found significant evidence of Russian interference, which it says was sanctioned by the Kremlin.
But when pressed on the issue, the Russian president suggested that the US itself could have been behind the hacks. He claimed they could have used relatively easily available tools that allow you to change the location of the IP addresses in order to make it look like the hacks came from Russia.
‘Hackers can be from anywhere,’ he told Kelly. ‘There can even be hackers, by the way, in the United States, who very skillfully and professionally shifted the blame onto Russia. Could you accept that?
‘In the midst of political battle, by some calculations, it was convenient for them to release this information. So they released it, calling it Russia. Can you imagine something like that? I can.’
And when Kelly brought up a highly controversial alleged dossier that claims the Kremlin has compromising information on Trump, the Russian leader dismissed it as ‘another load of nonsense’.
‘I never met with [Trump],’ he said. ‘We have a lot of Americans who visit us. Do you think we’re gathering compromising information on all of them right now or something?
‘Are you all… Have you all lost your senses over there!?’
Putin then accused Kelly – and by implication all Americans – of being hypocrites.
‘I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but the United States everywhere, all over the world, actively interferes with the electoral campaigns of other countries,’ he said.
‘Put your finger anywhere on the map of the world, and you will hear complaints that American officials are interfering in political processes.’
This wasn’t the first time Kelly grilled Putin on the hacking allegations.
Moderating a panel of world leaders at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Kelly told the Russian leader that ‘all evidence – digital fingerprints, IP addresses’ pointed to Russia being involved.
‘What fingerprints? Or hoof prints? Or horn prints? What are you talking about?!’ Putin replied.

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller are engaged - One Love Manchester concert

And while the focus was firmly on ‘love’ and ‘unity’ – as well as sticking two fingers up to terrorists – some fans couldn’t help but notice a ring on her left finger and now believe the 23-year-old pop star may be engaged.
Ariana Grande and Mac Miller are engaged - One Love Manchester concert

Speculation is rife that the sparkler could be an engagement ring as it looks like a pretty hefty rock, as well as the fact Ariana welcomed her 25-year-old beau Mac Miller onto the stage for a rather romantic duet last night.
The duo – who went public with their romance in September last year –  performed The Way on Sunday night, with Ariana telling the 50,000-strong crowd it was all about ‘love’.
And during some close-ups of Ariana, the ring could be seen in full view.
This fan said what everyone was thinking: Ariana’s engagement could never overshadow the amazing concert she put on, but it would still be pretty exciting if it turns out she is engaged.
Soon, everyone was cottoning on.
But these fans were having none of it, insisting it was just a dress ring.
However, the ring could also be seen in photos of Ariana arriving back in Florida in the wake of the Manchester attack in May.

Mac joined Ariana on private jet last week as she returned to the UK with her family ahead of Sunday night’s benefit concert.
Before the concert, she visited the Manchester children’s hospital, showering the survivors of the attack, following her Manchester Arena concert, with gifts.

Reps for Ariana have been contacted for comment.

'Smartest speaker on offer' - Apple confirms release of HomePod

It will be launched in December to compete with Amazon Echo and Google Home, which have both been really successful.
'Smartest speaker on offer' - Apple confirms release of HomePod

The move had been the focus of rumous in the run-up to the Apple event on Monday.
Apple says its history of ‘reinventing portable music’ through iTunes and the iPod means it is in a strong position to challenge its rivals.
The HomePod will be just under 7in high and houses the company’s virtual assistant, Siri.
Siri, who hasn’t always been known to get the gist, has been heavily updated by Apple to better understand context, the firm says, and in HomePod will be able to answer user queries and details about music when prompted using the voice command ‘Hey, Siri’.
The device contains six microphones to pick up voice commands.
The Amazon Echo and the Google Home operate in a similar way, using voice commands to wake the assistant to ask for help.
Apple says the A8 processor chip – the one used in the iPhone – means HomePod will be the ‘smartest home speaker’ on offer.
Part of this claim comes from the speaker’s ability to adjust sound levels when playing music based on its surroundings. Apple says HomePod is ‘spatially aware’ and can respond as such.
Much like its rivals, the HomePod will also be able to control other smart, internet-connected items around the home, including lightbulbs.
Overall control of the HomePod can be maintained from the Home app, and Apple also revealed users will be able to pair their phone with HomePod by holding it next to the speaker.
Apple has not confirmed the price of the HomePod for the UK.
